A Model for Urban Mobility and Safety: Aparecida de Goiânia's International Recognition

Aparecida de Goiânia, a burgeoning city in the prosperous Brazilian state of Goiás, has recently been spotlighted on the international stage for its innovative initiatives in road safety and urban mobility. The city was honored with the prestigious FIA Americas Awards on February 20th, celebrating its achievements in transforming urban transport and enhancing safety.

This significant recognition was formalized during an event attended by prominent figures from the worlds of motorsport and mobility. Among those present were ACIAG President Max Coelho, INPROTRAN Vice President Francisco Garonce, ACBr Vice President Humberto Kennedy, and online presence by Giovani Guerra, President of the Brazilian Confederation of Motorsport (CBA). Their presence underscored the collaborative efforts required to foster road safety and sustainable mobility.

The ceremony in Brazil followed an international awards event earlier in the month in Panama City, consolidating ACIAG’s work as a reference point across the continent. It highlighted Aparecida de Goiânia’s commitment, under the leadership of ACIAG and in partnership with INPROTRAN and ACBr, to pushing forward innovative and sustainable mobility solutions in Brazil.

During the event, Max Coelho emphasized the multi-faceted approach the city has taken. “From initiatives aimed at improving road infrastructure to awareness programs about public and alternative transport, ACIAG and the City Hall have spearheaded efforts to create a more accessible, efficient, and environmentally friendly environment for all our citizens,” he stated. He also noted significant strides such as a commercial mission to Mexico to explore opportunities in the electric vehicle industry and progress towards establishing Brazil’s first oval racetrack in the municipality.

The event also set the stage for crucial discussions about the future of urban mobility and traffic safety in the city. Following the ceremony, a strategic work meeting was organized by the ACBr, a member of the FIA in Brazil. This meeting included INPROTRAN, ACIAG, and municipal secretaries, aiming to develop a joint action plan to further enhance Aparecida de Goiânia’s role as a model project for road safety and urban mobility.

During this strategic session, it was agreed to align efforts towards presenting projects to the FIA that comply with Brazil’s National Plan to Reduce Deaths and Injuries in Traffic (PNATRANS) and the United Nations’ 2030 Agenda. The primary focus of this initiative will be the significant reduction of accidents and injuries from traffic incidents in the city.

As part of their committed efforts, a technical visit was conducted by Dr. Francisco Garonce from INPROTRAN and Dr. Humberto Kennedy from ACBr, assessing critical traffic points throughout Aparecida de Goiânia. This comprehensive action aimed to evaluate current conditions and guide potential interventions to enhance road safety. Additionally, the visit identified ways in which the FIA, in collaboration with the local government, INPROTRAN, ACBr, and ACIAG, can contribute to building a safe and sustainable traffic system in the city, with initial actions to be implemented within the year 2024.

“Aparecida de Goiânia is ideally positioned to receive FIA’s support for effective actions to reduce accidents and injuries in traffic, thanks to the political will of municipal leaders to change the current reality, the backing of local industry and commerce, and the unified efforts of FIA representatives in Brazil. Undoubtedly, this will be a standout project that can be showcased to the world as a success story in life preservation,” stated Francisco Garonce from INPROTRAN.

This collaborative movement marks a significant step for Aparecida de Goiânia, not only in gaining international recognition but also in committing to concrete actions that promote safety and sustainability. Through this partnership, the city is poised to serve as an exemplar, demonstrating that safer and more inclusive urban environments are achievable, especially with the backing of the International Automobile Federation.
