App Delivery Drivers in Brazil: Preferences and Demographics
2 min readOn-demand product delivery and travel applications employ around 1.5 million people in Brazil, according to a survey by the Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics (IBGE). A recent survey by Lalamove, a delivery platform, showed that 30% of drivers registered on an app prefer to work with product deliveries.
According to the survey, 20.3% of interviewees mentioned time flexibility as a crucial factor in deciding which modality to choose. More than 5,600 driver partners active on the platform participated in the survey.
“It is necessary to analyze the data sensitively, this increase can be attributed to a series of reasons such as preference to avoid prolonged personal interactions, the search for more security, or even the option to navigate simpler routes”, says Helena Lizo, General Director of Lalamove Brazil.
Data collected in 2023 focused on the small 4-wheel driver category, which includes vehicles such as Hatch and Sedan. The interviews took place with drivers who work in the cities of São Paulo, Campinas, Rio de Janeiro, Belo Horizonte, Curitiba, Brasília, Porto Alegre and Fortaleza.
According to Lalamove’s 2023 Annual Global Driver Report, in Brazil, the majority of delivery drivers are between 30 and 49 years old. The age group corresponds to 66.05% of four-wheel drivers registered on the platform. More than half, around 52%, only completed high school or equivalent.

The study carried out by the Brazilian Center for Analysis and Planning (Cebrap), conducted interviews with delivery people and drivers. At the request of the Brazilian Mobility and Technology Association (Amobitec), the research used data provided by the main application platforms operating in Brazil. Among this information, they combined quantitative data on races and deliveries provided by 99, iFood, Uber and Zé Delivery, with qualitative interviews of 3,025 drivers and delivery people.
The analysis also showed that there are 1,660,023 Brazilians working on these platforms. According to Cebrap, the survey considered app drivers and couriers who made at least one trip between August and November in 2022. Of this total, 385,742 were couriers who drove bicycles and motorbikes.
