Japan Unveils Its First Urban Air Mobility Center in Tsukuba

The city of Tsukuba, in Ibaraki Prefecture, Japan, entered into a partnership with EHang to establish the first center of air mobility urban area (UAM) of the country. The company develops and manufactures autonomous aerial vehicles and eVtols, vertical take-off aerial vehicles.

According to the partnership, the center will serve as a demonstration flight site, with ground infrastructure and a maintenance base for several aircraft of the type eVTOL. They also hope to service driverless vehicles, including the EH216-S, for example.

The creation of the urban air mobility center also has the support of AirX, a Japanese digital air mobility platform company. The property is located on the site of the former Helicopter Command and Control Center owned by the Ibaraki Prefectural Government. The UAM Center, as it is being called, already houses hangars with capacity for approximately 25 units of EH216-S aircraft.

“In the future, we plan to offer air tourism services with state-of-the-art EH216-S eVTOL aircraft at this location. Looking ahead, AirX is preparing to launch additional UAM centers in Tokyo, solidifying our commitment to leading the development of UAM and transforming the future of transportation in Japan,” said Kiwamu Tezuka, founder and CEO of AirX.

The shared landing platform, used by both helicopters and eVTOLs, covers an area of around 30 thousand square meters. According to AirX, the UAM Center is designed to meet the growing needs of next-generation air mobility. For the company, these needs include pilotless eVTOL aircraft, helicopters and private jets, for example.
