July 25th is marked by the celebration of Driver’s Day. The date chosen to celebrate and honor the workers responsible for transporting goods and people also represents the day dedicated to São Cristovão, patron saint of drivers. The commemorative date was established on October 21st, by Decree No. 63,461, in 1968.

According to data from the National Transport Confederation (CNT), in 2023 Brazil already had more than 74 million licensed drivers in Brazil. This total includes truck drivers, public transport drivers and even app workers. In 2022, for example, 1.5 million of this total drivers worked through applications and digital platforms.

CNT data also shows that more than 60% of products pass through national highways. Despite the reduction in the number of truck drivers, according to data from the National Traffic Department (Denatran) collected between December 2011 and January 2023, the sector still represents 4.367 million people.

In addition to recognizing the importance of these workers, the date also plays a fundamental role as a warning about the safety of these professionals. In the last decade, Brazil recorded a 13.5% increase in traffic deaths (in absolute numbers). This index takes into account the previous decade, according to a survey by the Institute of Applied Economic Research (Ipea).

The research “Balance of the 1st decade of action for traffic safety in Brazil and perspectives for the 2nd decade” also revealed a mortality rate per 100 thousand inhabitants that was 2.3% higher in this period. According to Ipea researchers, the result was based on data from Datasus, a Ministry of Health platform, and occurrences on highways recorded by the Federal Highway Police (PRF) between 2010 and 2019.

According to Mecanizou, a startup that connects mechanical workshops to automotive parts suppliers, new technologies have great potential in guaranteeing the safety of these workers.

“Just to illustrate, we could remember that systems such as adaptive cruise control, which automatically adjusts the vehicle’s speed based on surrounding traffic, and lane keeping assistance, which helps keep the vehicle within the lane, are becoming standard in many modern vehicles”, says Ian Faria, co-founder and CEO of Mecanizando. Still, the startup also states that care behind the wheel remains an absolute priority, as well as carrying out regular preventive maintenance, for example.
