LEGO serves up the McLaren P1 in Technic Form
2 min readThe Technic line from LEGO is known for delivering some excellent machines. I’m talking about both in their overall design and the actual functionality of the pieces and engineering involved. The latest automotive icon to get the Technic treatment? None other than the wonder from Woking, the McLaren P1.

This kit, which goes on sale on August 1st, is comprised of 3,893 pieces. Once assembled, you have a 1/8 scale P1 to display, and it’s a P1 with a working 7-speed gearbox, spinning V8 engine, adjustable rear wing, and even the dihedral doors. Those doors posed a bit of a challenge for the LEGO Technic team. A new mechanism was created in order to keep the doors open when you want to display the car in such a manner. And make sure you have plenty of space when you do display it, because at 1/8 scale it’s pretty large. I’m talking about 23″ long, 9.5″ wide, and 5.5″ tall.

Also, if you’re going to order one, get your bank account primed. Any Technic kit can be expensive, and this one certainly isn’t one of the most expensive out there, but the $449.99 asking price is a lot. That’s a lot more compared to the $180 for the Porsche 911 RSR, but well under the $700 LEGO wants for the Liebherr Crawler Crane LR 1300. You can still pay more, too, if you leave the Earthly realm and start eyeing up the Star Wars kits.
Back to the P1, though. It’s a nice-looking kit with a hefty price tag. It would look pretty sweet next to my LEGO Defender, though.
