Many motorcyclists are so passionate about their bike that they want to take care of it at home. As they have an engine, suspensions, wheels and practically all mechanical parts visible, this is possible. There are several types of care for your motorcycle that you can do at home.

“There are some basic checks that motorcyclists can carry out on their motorcycle to ensure safety, durability and savings with regular maintenance”, highlights the Marketing analyst at Blokton, a Honda dealership network in Paraná, Marlon Cristiano.

There is even a method, created by Honda, as a domestic complement to periodic maintenance. Known by the acronym P-CLOC, the method brings together five basic care that any motorcyclist can, and should, take with their motorcycle.

Each letter of the P-CLOC acronym represents a critical aspect of maintenance, explains Cristiano. The five points are: tires, controls, lights (electrical part), oil (and fuel) and transmission chain.

The P-CLOC approach works as a home complement to periodic maintenance, according to Honda. Check out the five basic precautions to keep your motorcycle in good condition, without needing to be a mechanic expert.

P – tire check

The first step involves inspecting the tires. Check that they have the correct pressure, preferably while they are still cold. Tires need to be calibrated at least every 15 days. Also take the opportunity to monitor the tread wear and replace it when you arrive at T.W.I..

C – checking commands

The first “C” of the P-CLOC strategy refers to the bike’s controls. Check the minimum clearance required in the brake and clutch controls, adjusting according to usage preference and applying lubricant, if necessary. For brakes, inspect the pads and fluid level in the reservoir. Pay attention to noises when applying the brakes; may indicate excessive wear of pads or linings.

L – electrical part

The electrical part is essential for safety. So, before driving, check that the flashlight, brake light, turn signals and high and low beam are operating correctly. Do not install equipment or accessories not recommended by the manufacturer, as they may cause damage to the electrical system.

O – oil and fuel level

Check the motorcycle’s oil level on a level surface and with the engine cold. Pay attention to the recommended oil change intervals, as this is essential for proper engine performance. If you don’t use the motorcycle frequently, it is also important to check the fuel regularly.

C – transmission current

The second “C” refers to the transmission current. In this case, it is an invitation to consult the owner’s manual which indicates the chain adjustment and replacement standards. Check that the chain is properly tensioned and, when cleaning, preferably use SAE 80 or 90 transmission oil to lubricate. Although many use petroleum-based products, such as thinner, for cleaning, don’t do this. These products impair the durability and proper functioning of the chain.

Motorcycle review

According to the Blokton analyst, carrying out these basic checks at home can mean the difference between a safe trip and a dangerous unforeseen event.

“Motorcyclists who do not adopt this type of preventive inspection are subject to higher costs in periodic maintenance at the dealership and increased risk of accidents”, says the expert.

However, the Honda dealership representative makes a point of warning that home care does not dispense with preventative maintenance. In other words, carry out the revisions scheduled by the manufacturer within the deadline.
