Participation of women drivers in transport apps in Brazil increases | Estadão Mobility |
2 min readThe participation of women drivers in transport apps in Brazil has grown. Between January 2019 and January 2023, the number of professionals using cars as a work tool increased by 50.3%. The data was released by the São Paulo State Traffic Department (Detran-SP).
Furthermore, during this period, the total number of women residing in the State of São Paulo who use a car to work rose from 931,608 to 1,400,513. According to Detran-SP, the number was calculated based on people who registered the observation ‘Exerts Remunerated Activity (EAR)’ on their National Driving License (CNH).
In this context, women face challenges and seek opportunities in the sector. After all, this change of scenery promotes gender equality and brings safer options for women who are passengers.
According to Tatiana Bonifácio, marketing manager at Gaudium, a startup focused on the mobility and logistics markets, challenges still exist. However, women adapt daily to work as app drivers.
“In my view, harassment and, mainly, the feeling of insecurity that drivers may have during their workday, especially at night, are the biggest challenges for drivers today”, he assesses.
Women overcome challenges daily
Tatiana points out that, to escape insecurity, an alternative that many women use is not to force themselves to work late at night. There are also apps that are exclusively for women, or that have categories to cater only to this audience.
“Applications must do their part to create a safe environment and ensure that drivers have their criticisms and suggestions heard. In addition to calling the authorities if a crime is suspected. App owners should look for technology that allows the creation of exclusive female transport categories, for example, allowing drivers the option of transporting only other women”, he assesses.
Another example that Tatiana mentions is the panic button functionality. After all, the resource can be used whenever the driver feels in danger.
As a security measure, companies may require a photo from passengers when registering on the app. Furthermore, the expert points out that it is important to have a zero tolerance policy in cases of disrespect towards those who are driving, subject to account deletion.
Tatiana also reinforces that public authorities must be more incisive in matters relating to the punishment of crimes against women. “There cannot be the slightest feeling of impunity in cases of disrespect towards women, so that this is not reflected in the most diverse social spheres, including within transport”, she points out.
