Public Consultation on Electric Vehicle Charging Safety Extended

The deadline for the public consultation to discuss security criteria in the charging processes electric vehicles was extended for another 90 days. Initially, the event was scheduled for May 6th. The request for extension presented by the president of the Brazilian Electric Vehicle Association (ABVE), Ricardo Bastos, on April 17th, asked for a new deadline for the discussion. Initially, the consultation would only take place 30 days from publication, held on April 5th. The short deadline caused at least nine entities to issue a joint statement to users and owners of electric vehicles.

Other entities and companies submitted similar requests. “The signatory entities, from now on, reaffirm that the debate on reducing the risk of fire incidence, as well as its consequences, is opportune, and they are working together to offer their contributions”, they state in the text. The request was accepted by Fire Department officials on Tuesday, the 7th. According to ABVE, with the extension of the deadline, new meetings will take place in the coming days.

Despite public consultation, current laws, rules, regulations and ordinances, already in force, remain in force. Among them, Law No. 17,336, of March 30, 2020, which already provides for the mandatory provision of a solution for recharging electric vehicles in new buildings in São Paulo.

Next steps

The Association also proposed the creation of a joint ABVE/CB-SP working group to address safety and fire prevention criteria. The central theme still involves electric cars and charging equipment in garages.

At the same time, the organization also suggested carrying out a simulation, coordinated by companies, firefighters and technicians. This test should “evaluate the real safety conditions of vehicles, batteries and charging equipment, as well as the technologies already available to control fires”, they explain.
