Fines when transporting dogs
On World Dog Day, the Brazilian Traffic Code (CTB) reminds us that leaving the animal loose in the vehicle can be a risk for both the driver and the dog. Article 252 of the CTB provides for a penalty for drivers who transport animals on their left or between their arms and legs.
In this case, the infraction is of a medium nature and results in the addition of four points to the medical record. In addition, the driver will need to pay a fine of R$130.16.
Another infraction that may occur when transporting dogs is provided for in article 235 of the CTB. It concerns a very common practice among dogs, when they are not restrained by a safety device: sticking their head out of the car during the journey.
This infraction is serious, resulting in the addition of five points to the driver’s license and a fine of R$195.23. According to information from Detran-SP, “this year, eighty drivers were fined in the state for this infraction, a number that rises to 119 in total since 2020”.
Risks of allowing the animal to be loose in the car
“When an animal has its head out of the car window, it is exposed to various risks, such as trauma from objects flying in the wind or even from structures”, explains Bianca Amorim, a veterinarian trained at UFV and owner of Pet Salute clinic, in Juiz de Fora (MG).
In addition to the obvious risk of collision, other problems can occur with this practice. “It is worth noting that, for animals with respiratory or even ophthalmic problems, this direct contact with the wind and pollution from cities can inflame the structures of these systems and worsen existing problems”, summarizes the veterinarian.
But the animal loose in the car is not at risk just by sticking its head out, any transport without a seat or crate can be harmful to the dog. “The animal released inside the car, especially on roads with many potholes, can suffer trauma from the movement of the vehicle”, he warns.
How to choose the ideal transport box?
The ideal car seat or carrier for your dog must take five factors into account: animal size, accessibility, comfort, ventilation and safety.
“The box or chair must offer enough space for the pet to be able to sit, stand up, lie down and move around comfortably. It must be easy to enter and exit for the animal, padded, allow the animal to have good ventilation to avoid hyperthermia, and allow it to be secured in the car”, explains Bianca about each of the factors listed above.
At the time of use, “there is no specific maximum time for an animal to remain in a transport box, but it is important to consider comfort and needs”, argues the specialist. Therefore, it is necessary to provide water for the dog and take breaks on long trips, allowing the pet to “stretch” and do its business.
The veterinarian explains that “animals may need time to adapt, so it is good to get them used to it gradually”. One solution would be to offer rewards every time the dog enters the device, creating a positive association.
Finally, some dogs may have special conditions. “There are dogs that normally feel nauseous during travel, due to a condition known as motion sickness, which is motion sickness.” At the same time, other animals may be stressed by transportation. In this case, Bianca explains that it is necessary to observe the animal’s behavior and adjust the trip according to your friend’s needs.
