The Fédération Internationale de l’Automobile (FIA) has launched an ambitious new initiative to promote the use of safe, high-quality helmets. This program, titled the ‘Helmet Wearing Program’, is a three-year campaign that aims to raise awareness about the importance of wearing proper helmets, especially for motorcyclists and cyclists, with the aim of reducing road fatalities.

With a commitment to invest €300,000 in the first year, the FIA is supporting six different projects. These projects will be developed in collaboration with FIA Member Clubs and will include training modules aimed at at-risk groups, as well as community awareness campaigns focused on the use of children’s helmets. The expectation is that these actions will contribute significantly to road safety, protecting lives and promoting safer practices among users of two and three-wheeled vehicles.

The official launch of the program took place during the FIA 120th Anniversary Conference, held in Samarkand, Uzbekistan. At this event, the National Automobile and Karting Federation of Uzbekistan (NAFKU) conducted a group training session. This session not only covered the theory of safe driving, but also included practical driving exercises, providing complete and comprehensive training for participants.

Two leading Uzbek food delivery companies, Express24 and Uzum, have signed up to participate in the trainings. The inclusion of these companies is especially significant, since their couriers use two-wheeled vehicles daily and are directly exposed to traffic risks. The participation of these companies demonstrates a commitment to the safety of their employees and the promotion of safer driving practices.

The FIA helmet program seeks to address a significant global challenge. According to statistical data, users of two- and three-wheeled vehicles represent 21% of traffic fatalities worldwide. This high mortality rate is an urgent concern that the FIA is determined to address through this innovative program. By funding local demonstration projects in partnership with FIA Member Clubs, the organization is creating a direct and positive impact on local communities.

The training modules, an integral part of the program, are designed to help vulnerable groups adopt stronger security practices. Furthermore, promoting awareness about the use of children’s helmets is a crucial component of the campaign, highlighting the importance of protecting future generations from an early age.

This campaign is not an isolated effort, but rather a continuation of the work previously carried out by FIA Member Clubs in various regions around the world. In Southeast Asia, for example, countries such as Thailand, the Philippines and Vietnam have already participated in similar initiatives. In Africa, Kenya and Tanzania have been hotbeds of road safety efforts, while in South and Central America, Costa Rica, Mexico, the Dominican Republic and Peru have seen significant advances thanks to FIA interventions.

From 2025, the project will be expanded to include even more regions, amplifying its impact and scope. This expansion is a testament to the program’s early success and the continued need for such initiatives on a global scale.

FIA President Mohammed Ben Sulayem expressed his enthusiasm and commitment to the cause: “At FIA, we are committed to improving road safety outcomes in our global communities. The Helmet Wearing Program will complement our existing efforts to protect motorcyclists, cyclists and delivery drivers. I am confident that we can drive measurable change through this campaign.”

The campaign is supported by the FIA Foundation, which provides the necessary funding for the implementation and expansion of the program. This support is vital to the FIA’s mission to promote road safety around the world. With the continued collaboration of partners and the implementation of effective projects, the initiative aims to save lives and improve safety for all road users.

In summary, the FIA’s ‘Helmet Usage Program’ represents a significant step in the fight for safer roads. Through training, awareness and financial support, the FIA is leading global efforts to protect lives and promote road safety.
