Brazil is prepared to lead the global bioenergy market
3 min readReducing carbon emissions is one of humanity’s most important issues this century. If we want a habitable and safe planet, we need the union of all nations to contain global warming, as there are no borders when it comes to sustainability. The planet is a living, connected organism, so what happens here is reflected in the other hemisphere. This delicate ecological balance further reinforces the need to join forces to preserve the environment for future generations.
In this scenario, Brazil stands out as a global leader at the forefront of clean energy production. If we were once the “country of the Amazon”, when the topic is sustainability, today we are also the “country of bioenergy” with ethanol, biomethane, biodiesel, hydrogen and the various sources of bioenergy that will help to decarbonize the energy matrix of the planet. Since the introduction of anhydrous ethanol in gasoline in 1931, the country has shown continuous leadership in the ethanol sector. bioenergy.
Circular economy
In 2023, anhydrous ethanol mixed with gasoline and hydrated ethanol consumed directly by flex vehicles, equivalent to more than 85% of the fleet, were responsible for almost 45% of all energy demand for light fuels in the country. These data are part of the unprecedented study More efficient technological trajectories for the decarbonization of mobility, commissioned by MBCB (Low Carbon Mobility Cooperation Agreement for Brazil).
Since 2003, the presence of ethanol in Brazil’s fuel matrix has prevented the emission of more than 660 million tons of CO2, equivalent to the planting of almost 5 billion trees over 20 years (Unique).
On another front, the transformation of biomass into biofuels, food and energy demonstrates the efficiency of innovation and the sustainability of the circular economy in Brazil. Sugarcane plants, for example, reuse waste such as bagasse and straw to produce bioelectricity, biogas and biomethane, optimizing the conversion of energy captured in the field into useful forms for society, especially in sustainable mobility. The same circular economy mechanism for the production of biofuels and bioenergy can be applied to animal waste from the protein industry, with the increase in biogas from landfills, in addition to several other sources of biofuel production from agribusiness.
World watching COP30
The importance of national bioenergy will become even more evident in the future, also in the geopolitical context. Those who have energy have independence, which is a crucial issue for national security. In this scenario, Brazil, with its rich biodiversity and technological innovation, is in a unique position to lead this transformation.
With decades of experience, a robust, innovative industrial sector and a firm commitment to sustainability, the country has all the necessary tools to lead the bioenergy revolution. Promoting new technologies like SAF and biomethane is just the beginning.
The world is watching Brazil, especially because we will host, in November 2025, in Pará, the 30th UN Conference on Climate Change (COP30). The event is expected to attract more than 40 thousand visitors during the main conference days. Due to its importance, the IDB (Inter-American Development Bank) itself will open a project office so that Pará can accelerate the application of US$300 million in decarbonization and infrastructure works, reinforcing the transition program to zero polluting gas emissions by 2050 in the state.
In 2022, Brazil was the fifth largest emitter of carbon dioxide in the world, with 4% of emissions. But our country could be the first emitter of carbon dioxide to eliminate its emissions, bioenergy in Brazil mainly focuses on reducing deforestation and making energy transition to renewable sources. We are ready to show the world how to grow socially and economically while preserving the environment. This is a call to action for other nations to follow the Brazilian example and contribute to a greener and safer planet for everyone.
