Car for beginners: what to take into account when buying | Estadão Mobility | Mobility Workshop
2 min readDriving is not an easy task. After all, you have to deal with several commands simultaneously, while observing the traffic around you. This movement, natural for experienced drivers, is not so simple for those just starting out. And the vehicle model can make it difficult. So, what is the best car for beginners?
If the driver has the means, it is best to opt for an automatic car equipped with assistance.
“Currently, automatic gear changes and advanced assistance systems enable electronic resources such as sensors, actuators, control modules and software to assist the driver with alerts and autonomous actions to avoid collisions”, says Cleber William Gomes, professor of Mechanical Engineering from the Ignatian Educational Foundation (FEI).
More modern cars also offer a semi-autonomous driving system. It brings together devices such as adaptive cruise control, which programs the vehicle’s speed respecting the pace of the car in front. Furthermore, they have features such as emergency braking and lane assistant, in which the car “reads” the signs to stay between them.
The professor highlights the importance of using technological developments correctly. In other words: respecting traffic laws and the manufacturer’s recommendations. “They are beneficial in making the driving experience more positive, safe and comfortable,” he says.
Car for beginners: sports, no!
It’s natural for novice drivers to prefer cars with automatic transmission. Vehicles with this equipment are already the majority on the market, leaving manual changes only for entry-level or sports models.
In any case, learning to drive a vehicle with a manual transmission is essential for completing the Detran assessment when obtaining a National Driving License (CNH).
However, anyone learning to drive should avoid sports cars. Very fast vehicles require a certain amount of skill, especially if they are rear-wheel drive, with a tendency to slip more if not properly tamed. “The lack of experience and caution is a risk for any driver,” says Gomes.
The professor warns that very fast cars, combined with the driver’s lack of experience, become dangerous. “The vehicle driven at high speed changes braking time and stability,” he explains. Therefore, even if the car is powerful, the beginner must maintain slower paces.
Another point of attention for beginners is to know your car well. During overtaking conditions, for example, it must be assessed whether, given the speed of the vehicle in front, the maneuver can be carried out. This requires a viable and safe distance. Gomes also warns about the use of entertainment equipment. Screens, lights and moving images can distract new drivers. Finally, the teacher reminds us that knowing traffic laws is essential for beginners. “You must obey the signs. But the main function of laws is to prevent accidents and deaths and not to avoid fines for traffic violations,” he says.
